Tardive Dyskinesia is a horrible, devastating and sometimes lifelong
syndrome for those diagnosed. It affects its victims physically,
mentally, socially, emotionally, and vocationally. The worst thing
about Tardive dyskinesia is the fact that they should have never
developed the syndrome in the first place. Tardive Dyskinesia
usually occurs after taking prescriptions like antipsychotic and
some gastrointestinal drugs.
The manufacturers of Reglan and its generic metoclopramide mention
the link between the development of Tardive dyskinesia and the
drug on its labeling, suggest the incidence rarely occurs. The
Food & Drug Administration has only approved Reglan for short-term
use (4 to 12 weeks) and only when conservative treatment fails.
Unfortunately, it has been suggested that approximately 1/3 of
patients are taking Reglan for 12 months or longer.
Long-term use can cause serious Metoclopramide side effects,
including Tardive dyskinesia. Two separate studies have determined
that the development of Tardive dyskinesia in long-term Reglan
users lies between 27 and 29 percent.
